Western Kentucky University General Motors Foundation FastLane Academic Enrichment Program

Western Kentucky University continues to offer the Fast Lane Academic Enrichment program that was previously funded through General Motors Foundation.  WKU College of Education faculty and junior and senior teacher’s candidates provide tutoring, homework assistance, and hands-on science, math, and other activities for youth in the After-School Learning Centers through a diversity in education class.  The program is aimed at increasing the educational skills and workforce knowledge of youth in grades K-10.

Western Kentucky University Civic Engagement Program
WKU has awarded the Housing Authority a grant for Civic Engagement.  The grant provides the services of Donna Workman, a retired master English teacher from Warren Central High School.  Workman will work with Sam Evans of WKU’s Education Department to create challenging, realistic community service projects to integrate into the WKU curriculum.  Projects will be based on Educating Citizens, a source book outlining civic responsibility.

After-School Program
The Housing Authority has 3 after-school learning centers.  The learning centers offer after-school tutoring, homework assistance and educational enrichment to 180-200 youth daily.  Youth from Gordon Avenue and Summit View and Angora Court public housing developments attend the Family Learning Center adjacent to the Housing Authority main office.  The Bryant Way and Phenix Place developments have their own learning centers. Each learning center is managed by a site supervisor who is a Western Kentucky University junior or senior level education, recreation, or sociology major or graduate.  Centers are staffed by part-time tutors who are WKU students as well as WKU America Reads tutors.  Learning Centers are open from 2:30-5:30 Monday through Friday with some variation depending on the center.  Fridays are reserved for enrichment activities and field trips for youth that have demonstrated good attendance, discipline, and school work.
