Supporting Residents Toward Independence
Employment & Education
Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS)
The FSS program helps 50 public housing families achieve self-sufficiency through employment support, credit repair, budgeting, and homeownership preparation. Participants also build savings through an automatic FSS Escrow Account as their income grows.

Workforce Development
REACH Higher Program
REACH Higher Welfare to Work provides 30 hours of paid work experience per week at $10/hour for six months, in lieu of TANF benefits. Participants also complete four hours of job and life skills training weekly. The program has been renewed annually since February 1997.

Food Access
Megan's Mobile Grocery
The area surrounding Gordon Ave./Summit View is designated a food desert by the USDA. HABG's Mobile Grocery bus — equipped with shelves, generator, cooler, and freezer — delivers healthy, affordable food directly to neighborhoods. The bus makes 25+ stops per week across low-income areas.

Homeownership
Live the Dream
HUD's Live the Dream Homeownership Supportive Services Program offers pre-purchase classroom training, one-on-one homeownership counseling, hands-on experience using Fannie Mae resources, and partnerships with faith-based organizations and local businesses.

Sherwin-Williams Paint Program
Job Skills · Partnership
Students receive two days of classroom instruction on paint basics, followed by two days of hands-on painting on a community project. Sherwin-Williams covers all program costs (~$30,000). Skills gained help participants find work with painting contractors.
POP-UP Program
Small Business Development
The People's Opportunity Program for Underserved Populations expands economic opportunities for minorities and under-resourced community members. Clients meet with a consultant to prepare a business plan and present to the POP-UP Board for funding and resources.
Fort Webb Cabinet Shop
Vocational Training · Since 1995
Opened in 1995 as a training program to teach unemployed residents woodworking skills. The Cabinet Shop produces custom furniture and cabinetry for local schools, churches, businesses, and residential customers. Handles cabinets, furniture repair, and custom casework.
Build-A-Bed
Community Partnership
A partnership with the BG Noon Rotary Club and Independence Bank responding to the community's critical need for beds. In five years, HABG and its partners delivered over 220 beds to families in need across the Bowling Green area.
Ms. Annie Clothing Bank
Resident Resource
Open to residents of all HABG developments, the clothing bank provides clothing and household goods for families. Operated entirely on a volunteer basis and accepts donations year-round.
Calvary Cares Food Bank
Food Access · Partnership
In partnership with Calvary Baptist Church, a food bank operates on-site at Summit View twice a month. Open to both residents and the public, it distributes food, clothing, and household items. Located near the elderly complex for easy senior access.
Youth Programs
Investing in the Next Generation
After-School Learning Centers
Education · 175–200 Youth Yearly
HABG operates two learning centers providing after-school tutoring, homework help, and educational enrichment to 175–200 youth per year. Staffed by part-time WKU student tutors and WKU America Reads tutors. Open Monday–Friday, 2:30–5:30 PM.
W.R.O.T.E. Summer & After-School Program
United Way Partnership
Funded by United Way of Southern Kentucky, this program provides educationally focused programming to reduce risk factors like poor academic achievement. Builds literary, science, and math skills to prepare youth for success in school, work, and life.
Aviation Program
STEM · Forgotten Heroes Foundation
Local pilots use their aviation expertise to help children experience flying an aircraft through a flight simulator. The Forgotten Heroes Foundation donated the flight simulator that powers the program.
P.O.W.E.R.G. Program
Girls Mentoring · BGPD Partnership
Police Officers With Educated Responsible Girls — an all-female mentoring program for middle and early high school girls, developed with the Bowling Green Police Department. Focuses on self-awareness, personal growth, accountability, and strengthening youth-police relationships.
Summer Academic Enrichment Camp
Youth · Annual Program
An annual summer camp providing academic enrichment, activities, and experiences for HABG youth. Registration opens each spring for current after-school students, HABG staff and residents, and the general public. Contact our office for current year details.
Green House & Community Garden
Warren County Conservation District
In partnership with the Warren County Conservation District, HABG's green house and community garden teach children and adults about gardening. Part of a larger vision to create a food supply and potential income stream for older residents.

HUD Grant · All Complexes
HABG receives a HUD grant to fund an Elderly/Disabled Service Coordinator who provides case management and program coordination for elderly and disabled residents across all complexes.
Gordon Ave. / Summit View Coordinator
HUD Grant · 50 Families
A HUD three-year grant funds a service coordinator providing case management and program coordination for 50 elderly/disabled families in the Gordon Avenue and Summit View complexes.
Bryant Way / Angora / Phenix Coordinator
HUD Grant · 50 Families
A HUD three-year grant funds a service coordinator providing case management and program coordination for 40 families and 10 elderly/disabled families across Bryant Way, Angora Court, and Phenix Place.
