Megan’s Mobile Grocery Store

Megan's Mobile Grocery Store

Established in 2019 as part of the non-profit arm of the Housing Authority of Bowling Green. Megan’s Mobile Grocery is a grocery on wheels.  Megan’s Mobile Grocery makes stops in impoverished areas so families can purchase the necessary staples they need at an affordable price.

How we started...

The location surrounding the Housing Authority of Bowling Green’s main developments, Gordon Ave./Summit View is currently listed as a food desert by the USDA.  The USDA definition of a food desert is vapid of fresh fruit, vegetables, and other helpful whole foods, usually found in impoverished areas.  We worked with other partner organizations in the community to help alleviate this problem.  We have established a mobile grocery store.  The mobile grocery store makes stops in impoverished neighborhoods so families can purchase the necessary staples they need to help combat this problem.  Neighborhoods include public housing, Garden Apts, Lee Pointe, & other low income areas.   Many individuals in these area also have transportation barriers or limited access via public transportation to access a grocery store.

We worked with WKU MBA students in 2019 who have created a business plan for the Mobile Grocery.  The business plan incorporates products and services, Marketing and Sales Plan, Financial Projections, and a possible bus route. They have also helped create a marketing flyer.

Warren County Public Schools donated a 34 passenger bus.  We refurbished the bus with shelves, generator, cooler, freezer, etc.  The bus was wrapped so it will be easily recognizable.  We surveyed approximately 90 individuals in early 2019 and all were very eager about the possibility of a mobile grocery store.  The survey showed that approximately 94% of those surveyed would use the truck 1-3 times per week and 46% stated they rely on someone else for transportation to the grocery store.  When utilizing the local transportation service it costs a minimum of $4.00 to and from a grocery store and will take approximately 35 minutes one way from Double Springs Road. When utilizing this service riders are limited to what bags they can carry in their hands only.
